I run a study group for first year students in Linear Algebra. It’s a small peer-to-peer thing and my official title is Student Mentor, so I don’t really lecture for them, or even give out answers (sometimes I don’t even know the answers). Tonight was my second group of the year and I’m so amped up from it right now. The students were all so bright and excited to talk about Vector Spaces and Subspaces and they actually wanted to stay a whole extra hour after it was supposed to have ended. A bunch of first years voluntarily spent an extra hour of their time after 10 pm doing Linear Algebra. How awesome is that? More importantly, though, they left with an understanding and they all told me that they’d learned more in 2.5 hours with me than in their lectures. I’m just so happy with the whole thing and I can’t wait for the rest of the semester with this amazing group.
